History Day

This afternoon I was absolutely floored by the intelligence and maturity of sixth graders.

I was a judge for History Day and got to learn from local sixth graders about ancient history as it relates to conflict and diplomacy. I was so impressed by their knowledge, the careful research they did, and the professional way in which they presented it all. They wrote annotated bibliographies in MLA format, for goodness sake. They built websites, made documentaries, put together amazing poster boards, and they presented it all by giving rich explanations of everything.

Just awesome. It gives me so much hope.

One of the kids encountered a lot of technological difficulties with his documentary videos, and he was very crestfallen. We were able to connect through this though, and we’re going to end up working together over the next few weeks before the regional competition to make an amazing video. This kid really knew his stuff and had a natural talent for narration. It will be fun to see how I can help get him ready for Regions.
